At our workshop in Haiti, decorative metal wall hangings are created from flattened drums which were originally used to transport oil or other industrial products. The tops and bottoms are removed and the drum is slit down the side. The drum is filled with dried banana leaves, cardboard or sugar cane leaves and set on fire to remove the paint and residue from drum. The steel drum is then flattened and the pattern is drawn.  It is then hammered, by hand, into highly decorative works of art. With only hammers, chisels and other simple tools, the artist creates decorative designs out of the flattened recycled steel drum.
